About the event:

Flute and piano recital | János Bálint, Nicolas Costantinou
Ledra Music Soloists invite you to a unique evening of chamber music for flute and piano with the internationally renowned flautist János Bálint and pianist Nicolas Costantinou. The two artists propose an exciting and varied programme of masterpieces, including world and national premieres. By means of the classical sonata form, the proposed works highlight not only the virtuosic abilities of the two instruments but also the wide range of timbres that their combination can yield.

More about the event:

Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Sonata in B minor, his most important work for the combination of these instruments, is a mixture of forms and styles from the 1730s. These include movements in the concertante style (the opening movement in the concerto grosso, the predominantly secular genre of the baroque), in the then-emerging style known as ‘gallant’, in the polyphonic ‘church’ style, and in the stylized secular dance. Swiss composer, critic, and painter Peter Mieg’s brilliant Sonata is rich in invention and melodic material. By contrast, the popular Sonata by the Frenchman Francis Poulenc is pervaded with bittersweet grace, wit, irony, and emotion. It is a prime example of contemporary aesthetics against the emotionality of C. Franck and the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. The evening concludes with Constantinos Y. Stylianou’s recent Sonata, revealing the composer's preference for the traditional classical sonata form, which he considers a constructive framework within the limits of tonality.

Programme

  1. S. Bach: Sonata in B minor for Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 1030 (c. 1736)
  2. Mieg: Sonata for flute and piano (1963)
  3. Poulenc: Sonata for flute and piano, FP164 (1957)
  4. Y. Stylianou: Sonata for flute and piano (2021–22)

The internationally renowned János Bálint has performed at the leading music festivals in Europe and has given concerts in some of the most prestigious concert halls. He already has thirty digital albums to his credit and has collaborated with well-known musicians, such as Ruggiero Ricci, Miklós Perényi, Georges Cziffra, Tamás Vásáry, and Zoltán Kocsis. He has performed all the repertoire for flute as a solo instrument, a repertoire that includes over a thousand pieces from the Baroque era to the present day and has made several transcriptions and arrangements of works written for other instruments. Currently, Mr. Bálint teaches at the Accademia Flautistica in Imola and at the Hochschule für Musik, Detmold, and regularly gives seminars around the world.

Steinway Artist Nicolas Costantinou is renowned for impressing audiences with his daring selection of repertoire, old and new, and his ability to collaborate with extraordinary instrumental ensembles. He has been hailed by critics as “… an artist of deep emotions, who is capable of performing music with his whole being and soul…” (Kaleva, 2003) while his interpretations have been described as “colossal” and “dramatic” (Dimitri Nicolau, 2002).
