The story of a gay man who grew up oppressed and shamed during the Lebanese civil war. Traumatized, he immigrates to Madrid, Spain and seeks to liberate himself through debauchery. Thirty-seven years after leaving Lebanon, Miguel feels ready to face the ghosts of his past. Using intertwining cinematic forms, melding documentary, animation, theater, archive material and location filming, this film offers an experience of self-confrontation, awareness and catharsis.

In 1979, Hossein was in Switzerland studying radiology and was unable to travel back to his homeland for his wedding. His wife, Tayi, literally married a portrait of him in Teheran. We discover the lifeline and photo albums of an Iranian family, to relive and reconstruct the aftermath of the revolution, the shift between a secularized nation into an Islamic Republic. An intriguing puzzle that constitutes modern Iranian identity.

A ferry bringing people and their stories from Ireland to Northern-Ireland and the other way around. Παρακολουθούμε την προσπάθεια του Sergio να εξισορροπήσει δύο κόσμους: το έργο που έχει αναλάβει, και την αυξανόμενη προσωπική εμπλοκή του στις ζωές των άλλων ενοίκων.

 

When a family becomes concerned about their mother’s well-being in a retirement home, private investigator Romulo hires Sergio, an 83 year-old man who becomes a new resident, and a mole inside the home, who struggles to balance his assignment with becoming increasingly involved in the lives of several residents. A stylish combination of an observational documentary and a spy movie, with sleek camerawork and wonderfully watchable characters.

Τους επόμενους μήνες ακόμα 37 άνθρωποι πεθαίνουν, εν μέρει λόγω της έλλειψης κατάλληλης υγειονομικής περίθαλψης στα δημόσια νοσοκομεία. Το ντοκιμαντέρ ακολουθεί μια ειδική ομάδα ερευνητών δημοσιογράφων της εφημερίδας Gazeta Sporturilor, καθώς αποκαλύπτουν μια τεράστια απάτη στον τομέα της υγείας, από την οποία είχαν ωφεληθεί διάφοροι μεγιστάνες και πολιτικοί.

 

In Bucharest, a fire breaks out in October 2015 and engulfs a club called Collectiv, immediately killing 27 people and injuring 180. Over the following months 37 more victims die, partially due to the lack of proper healthcare at the public hospitals. The documentary follows a crack team of Journalists investigators at the Romanian newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor as they try to uncover a vast health-care fraud that enriched moguls and politicians.

Magaluf is a small, peaceful town on the island of Mallorca that many have ventured to call “Τhe Balearic Twin Peaks”. A million tourists invade the streets every summer, as if they were specters transforming public spaces into a theme park where anything goes. A humorous, yet mysterious ensemble portrayal of a community that struggles to survive in a touristified context, as well as a reflection on what it means to be a tourist in Europe.

In a cluttered news landscape dominated by men, emerges India's only newspaper run by Dalit women. Facing entrenched gender bias and threats they investigate stories of unprosecuted rapes and murders, the corruption of illegal mining operations, the rise of Hindu nationalism, and much more.

An urban train link, the RER B, crosses Paris and its outskirts from north to south. Through a journey within indistinct spaces known as inner cities and suburbs we confront some of the faces and stories of which they are composed. We is a moving testament to the importance of filming as a process of bearing witness and remembering. It is subtle and shrewd in a world that favours shortcuts and easy answers.

Björn Andrésen was 15 when he starred as Tadzio in Luchino Visconti’s adaptation of Death in Venice. A year later, Visconti proclaimed him to be “the world’s most beautiful boy.” A comment that might have seemed flattering at the time became a massive burden. Andrésen, now in his 60s, bravely opens up about the irresponsible treatment he was subjected to and how the “curse of beauty” distorted his formative years.

Ο Ιβάν βγαίνει τακτικά στη θάλασσα διακινδυνεύοντας τη ζωή και την ελευθερία του. On the island of Ostrov in the Caspian Sea the inhabitants, left alone by the Russian state after the collapse of the Soviet Union, survive through poaching. Ivan regularly goes out to sea risking his life and freedom. The strong audiovisual approach captures the rough natural beauty of the island and creates a touching family portrait of the protagonists, who cling to a sense of hope in their family and community.

Το The Island Club, σε συνεργασία με το Διεθνές Φέστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ Λεμεσού, παρουσιάζει το οπτικοακουστικό πρόγραμμα Τα Πνεύματα του Δάσους. Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει δύο μουσικές περφόρμανς των Αντρούλας Καφά και Βερόνικας Γεωργίου μαζί με προβολές βίντεο, και συνδιαλέγεται με το αρχείο του Δήμα Ευθυβούλου (1924-2011), ενός Κύπριου φωτογράφου που έζησε στον Αμαζόνιο του Περού από το 1979 μέχρι το 1989 και που επεδίωξε, μέσω των φωτογραφιών του, να αποτυπώσει τα «πνεύματα της ζούγκλας».

 

Το αρχείο του Ευθυβούλου αποτελεί τη θεματική της έκθεσης Τα Πνεύματα του Δάσους: Μια Φωτογραφική Καινοτομία, η οποία πραγματοποιείται στο The Island Club μέχρι τις 8 Αυγούστου 2021.

The Island Club, in collaboration with the Lemesos International Documentary Festival, presents Spirits of the Rainforest, an audiovisual programme comprising musical performances by Androula Kafa and Veronica Georgiou along with video projections. The programme responds to the archive of Dimas Efthyvoulos (1924-2011), a Cypriot photographer who lived in the Peruvian Amazon between 1979 and 1989, and whose practice sought to capture “the spirits of the jungle”.

 

Efthyvoulos’ archive is the subject of the exhibition Spirits of the Rainforest: A Photographic Innovation, on view at The Island Club until 8 August 2021.

Positive Training: Become the person your dog thinks you are

 

Έχοντας μεταβεί από την εφαρμογή της παραδοσιακής εκπαίδευσης σκύλων στη θετική εκπαίδευσή τους, ο Στέφανος αφηγείται πώς αυτή η μετάβαση μεταμόρφωσε όχι μόνο τη σχέση του με τους σκύλους, αλλά και με τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό. Χρησιμοποιώντας θεωρητικές και πρακτικές μεθόδους, το σεμινάριο παρουσιάζει πώς οι σκύλοι μαθαίνουν με τη χρήση μεθόδων θετικής εκπαίδευσης, και εισηγείται τρόπους αντιμετώπισης προβληματικών συμπεριφορών.

 

In this workshop, Stephanos will present his own story of transformation, when he transitioned from traditional training to positive training and how this had an impact not only on his relationship with dogs, but also himself as a person. Through both theoretical and practical demonstrations, the workshop will cover how dogs can learn with positive training methods and how one can deal with problematic dog behaviours.

Μέσα από τις εμπειρίες, τις νίκες, τις δυσκολίες και τα διλήμματά τους, το ντοκιμαντέρ εκθέτει το πρόβλημα αλλά και τις λύσεις του, ενώ παράλληλα εξερευνά την ανθρώπινη κατάσταση στον δυτικό κόσμο.

 

In a consumerist society where everything, including man's best friend, is treated as disposable, everyday people aiding stray dogs remind us what being human(e) is all about. Through their experiences, successes, difficulties and dilemmas, the documentary exposes the problem and its solutions, while tackling the human condition in the western world.
