The play is a psychological drama of the 19th century, which has been characterized as a modern tragedy. The themes that plagued Strindberg and the society of the time - the eternal conflict between the sexes, marriage and the conflicts within it, authority over the child and who makes the decisions about its future - remain always relevant.
