About the event:
Theatriki Stegi Kyprou and Anyhow Theatre Ensemble present Euripides’ timeless play Iphigenia in Tauris, directed by Onisiforos Onisiforou, for one performance at the Pattichion Municipal Amphitheatre of Larnaca.
Iphigenia, daughter of Agamemnon, is saved at the last moment by the goddess Artemis before being sacrificed at Aulis. She is transported to the distant and barbaric land of Tauris, where she becomes a priestess in the goddess’s temple. There, charged with purifying and sacrificing any foreigners who arrive on shore, she encounters her brother Orestes — though at first she does not recognise him. Orestes has come with the intention of stealing the sacred statue of the goddess. Iphigenia in Tauris is not only an ancient myth, but a timely story of survival — a deep reflection on coercion, exile, memory, and kinship.

Director’s Note
There are things you can’t explain. Only feel. Like a memory without an image. Like a light whispering that we were never alone. Like a miracle.
Perhaps the miracle is something small. A subtle shift. A trace. Perhaps it is the moment when two people meet again. And again. And come alive once more. Because meeting is a choice. And the miracle follows.
In Iphigenia in Tauris, we witness life being born out of death. In a land where violence is law and human sacrifice a daily ritual, two “dead” souls are resurrected — because someone remembered. Someone loved.
Iphigenia believes Orestes is dead. Orestes thinks Iphigenia is lost forever. And yet, they stand before each other. Alive.
Recognition may seem like chance, but it isn’t blind. It is a kind of luck born from faith — faith that the other still exists, in memory, in the heart. They come back to life because someone carried them within.
Life is not the absence of death, but the presence of the other. The meeting. And when it happens, something shifts. Time bends, expands, dances. And in that dance, the human being shares. Opens up. Offers themselves. Disappears into the together.
And so, for a moment, the world is lit differently. With a dazzling light.
Perhaps theatre is that kind of light. A place where someone dares to reveal themselves — and another is there to meet them. And then, the light reaches further. It touches. It carries. Even in the harshest of places, the miracle finds a way. To slip in. To breathe. To shine.
And thus — even if only for a moment — we believe again, that the world can change.
