ACADEMIC LECTURE BY PROFESSOR ANDREI LANKOV |
Where: YPSONAS MUNICIPAL THEATRE
When: 17/11/2025
Tickets: From €35
About the event:
North Korea is more than just “the last Stalinist state.” It’s a survival laboratory where a spontaneous market economy coexists with total state control. The old socialist system collapsed in the 1990s—out of its ruins emerged a black market, which later became semi-legal, and now functions as an almost official system of internal capitalism. Why do the Kims tolerate this? How does this hybrid economy work? And why is “a step backward” sometimes part of the strategy?
Andrei Lankov — one of the world’s leading experts on North Korea, professor at Kookmin University in Seoul, author of numerous books and academic publications, and a regular commentator for Western media — will explain how North Korea balances between chaos and control, how its economy really functions, and why things there are far more complex than they seem.

ANTON DOLIN: YEAR IN CINEMA |
Where: YPSONAS MUNICIPAL THEATRE
When: 04/12/2025
Tickets: From €35
About the event:
The show must go on. Even after the end of the world.
We welcomed 2025 with the vampire Nosferatu — and now we bid it farewell with Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. Christmas brings a new Avatar, while ashes fall from the sky instead of snow.
Is today's cinema a chronicle of everyday disasters — or a recipe for salvation? Fighting the forces of darkness in The Sinners, stopping war in Superman, saving the planet from doom in Fantastic Four, Hollywood embarks on one last battle for the right to separate good from evil.
David Lynch is gone. Who do we turn to now? Jim Jarmusch, Jafar Panahi, Nadav Lapid, Bong Joon-ho, Wes and Paul Thomas Anderson search for a source of light in utter darkness. They have no capes, no tights, no superpowers — only talent, courage, a sense of humor, and the ability to feel others’ pain. That’s what helps them — and us — survive.
Join film critic Anton Dolin for a conversation about the films that defined this troubled season — and share the hope that the coming year will bring solace and a happy ending. Not only on screen, but in real life.
Anton Dolin’s books, including rare editions, will be available for purchase at the event, along with a signing session.
Anton Dolin is one of Russia’s most respected film critics, winner of the Enlightener Prize in 2024, and a member of the Golden Globe Awards jury. Until recently, he was a radio host, film reviewer on Evening Urgant, and editor-in-chief of Iskusstvo Kino magazine.

Anna Clyne: Pivot
Joaquín Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
Johannes Brahms: Symphony no. 3 in F major, op. 90
Lavinia Meijer harp
Karen Kamensek conductor
Two international star artists join the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in the Starlight 2 concerts. Harpist Lavinia Meijer, one of the most important harpists of her generation and Sony Classical exclusive, mesmerizes audiences with her bold explorations across classical, electronic, jazz, and avant rock music. Grammy Award-winning conductor Karen Kamensek is lauded for her expansive artistry, authoritative conducting and deep commitment for championing composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Under Kamensek’s masterful direction, harpist Lavinia Meijer will interpret Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a ravishing 20th century masterpiece. Inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez which served as summer residence for the Bourbon kings of Spain in the 18th c., Rodrigo captures an idealized, bygone Spain, blending diverse Spanish musical elements into a highly evocative work.
The concert will kick off with Pivot by the Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne. Bursting with energy and a distinct Celtic sound, the piece pivots from one lively tune to another, inspired by the composer’s experience at the Edinburgh International Festival. The programme will close with Brahms’ Symphony no. 3, one of his most personal, poetic and dramatically intense symphonic works.
